Install XP from USB?

I'll be testing this solution shortly - on a CD-less Atom desktop.  Being able to install from USB may well be quicker and easier - after all, CD is dead, right?

Power Outage - now THAT'S annoying

Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

How much do we need power?  We don't actually think about it much as we take it for granted.  So what happens when you have none?
  • Imagine waking up to darkness and the fact that the alarm did not go off as the power went for the whole area hours ago
  • Imagine not being able to make it light because your blinds are electrically-powered
  • Imagine not being able to have coffee because the coffee machine needs, erm, light
  • Imagine looking outside and seeing many in the same situation

But, on the bright side.....
  • Imagine that you can still get internet access over 3G
  • Imagine that you have a backup coffee machine and cook with gas...
  • Imagine that you still have summer tyres on the car and that those summer tyres are nearly worn out
  • Imagine that you're working from home today!!

The thing I'm most gutted about is that my Uptime of 222 days has been interrupted by the local power station being snowed-upon and giving up hope at 5am this morning

But, on the bright side, there are some "broken" trees from the weight of the snow.....pictures coming soon!!

Yes, these scallywags decided that they would move house.  Using the train

I have to say it's a most excellent idea.  Considering the short distance they were moving, that's an awful lot of (crap) beer they have there......!!

From LJ's site....the Spurs/Hull game today is on Show Comedy Extra.  Given the way Spurs have started this season, it's quite apt......

Update: Classic......the result - home defeat to Hull!

Someone in Zurich recently crashed into a speed camera.  Yes, the b3ta.com-style image does look like it has been Photoshopped (especially with the bed or lounger being transported).....but if you click on the image, you'll see it is a real incident

I don't know if the car was speeding but I can guarantee that no picture of the rear of the car has been taken

Apple Genius - Part 2

Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

Well I've had Genius for nearly 24 hours and I have to say it is good.  The playlists that you get are 25 songs long and usually have some goodies - more goodies than baddies.  Of course this is based on my chosen playlist as I have about 88Gb of music and there is less than 20Gb on my Touch.  But - as the missus will confirm, there is some "chaff" in the music collection...!

It will be interesting to see how Genius moves forwards; if there is a bias towards oft-played tracks then the gap between the rich and the poor will grow (top-class anology, eh ) - and my little-heard tracks will disappear.

I've never used playlists - rather chosen either to randomise on the whole 'pod or to play albums.....so this playlist orientation is good.

And it has awoken some memories of songs and times gone by.  Can't be bad

9/11 - 7 Years On

It's worth sparing  a thought this morning for those who perished in 9/11.  As I type, it's 7 years to the minute since the first airliner hit the North Tower.

There is nothing more to say.....perhaps watch 9/11 Loose Change and think of those no longer with us....

I was looking forwards to Genius until I saw this:

Erm, hello Apple - thanks but no.  "Turning on Genius will send information about your iTunes library to Apple"?

Eat my shorts  Until someone convinces me that Apple isn't using the fact that I listen to music some people consider "dodgy", I ain't enabling it

How d'you like them apples?

Update: call me weak, call me geek - I want to look at it.  So....enabled...

I've put Nana on Facebook and am in the process of getting the whole family to sign up as her friends.  Call it a social experiment if you will - it's not to coerce her into getting a computer (remember the first VCR...?!!) but to show her how much we appreciate her.  So, if you know or are related to her, sign up and link yourself to Nana

Google Chrome

So I've decided to have a sniff at Google Chrome browser.  First impression - it's very nice and clean but seems to be derived from Safari.  I've avoided installing Safari but thought I'd try Chrome in a virtual machine.

It identifies itself as "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.2.149.27 Safari/525.13" - confirming that it is indeed based on the same engine.

Nice and streamlined is my first impression;  there are not many options to tweak but I do like the context statusbar and good use of screen real estate gives me a positive feeling.  I'd say that Chrome should be something to welcome - especially if it really does sandbox each tab and protect people from crashes and from XSS problems.

EeePC Part 3

Right, after some success with the 701 image being dropped onto the 900 to make it English, I decided to look at Ubuntu for the Eee.  The image took about 10 minutes to prepare and about 30 to install - not bad considering.  Sound works out of the box as does wireless -

With the addition of a couple of packages, full updates and a little tweaking, it works very well.  The killer app "Frozen Bubble" has been installed and Citrix works.  Email works.  Web works.  Ubuntu even has a page to help you out with issues.....

Only Skype does not work perfectly.  Donaldo will just have to not hear from her big sis'

EeePC Part 2

The work I did in switching the Eee from German to English just has not been enough and it's been a bit buggy thusfar.  Functionally, it is fine but the Good Lady found some bits that I could not work out how to bring into English.  So my mate found an EeePC ISO image on peer-to-peer that is in English.

Just a little tinkering for keyboard layout and packages makes for an easier transition.  I'm not sure if modifying the apt-get source list is quite what I want yet but I modified the 701 to 900 in the sources.list file and tried updating.  Is there such a great difference from 701 to 900....I can see the whole of the 16Gb SSD....

So it's now a 701 with 20Gb in total.  Fine, huh?

Rescue Services, Tenerife

So we went to Tenerife from Gran Canaria recently; it was a nice trip, we did the north coast and also went up to the area near Teide - the highest point in Spain.

Up there in the baking temperatures, we found this little lady who was very, very thirsty.  We managed to re-use a Tupperware container someone dumped up there in the National Park and gave her some water.

Meanwhile, Esther Ramirez Ramirez Ramirez Gonzales called 112 - Spain's emergency number.  Her persuasive nature resulted in our little friend being taken off to the sanctuary of a local kennel.  Our good deed for the day saved the life of a lovely young lady

Oh the little people with little feet and little fingers have arrived.  In order to use the Asus EeePC, you have to either have ladyfingers or have fingernails.  Luckily, the 'andbrake 'as both.

Naturally, it came in German.  It's not too hard to remove most of the German locale but there is still some left.  Error messages and some dialog boxes feature German.

Anyway, she's 'appy now and it does office work, email, surfing and of course the killer application - Tetris.  Sudoku will be coming soon - or she'll kill me....

The webserver is now running Intel Atom.  Nice and quiet, small and only needing the second disk adding into a mirrored pair.

The second box will fall victim to my evil hand tomorrow night.  First thing that happened to it today when it arrived was to half-inch the SATA drive and cable.  I did get the RAM out but then realised.....they only have one slot.  Ahhhhh!!!!!!
